Subject: DfMA at The Madison, Canary Wharf
Having originally qualified as an architect and worked in various private design practices for 15 years, my interest in construction techniques and methodology led me into the role of a Design Manager with Balfour Beatty over 20 years ago (and where I met my co-host Paul Smith on my first day there).
I take great satisfaction from being involved in buildings that are both well-designed AND well-constructed. Spending time on site observing and talking to the people on the workfaces provides valuable insight into 'what good looks like' and where improvements can be made. Nowhere better can this apply than in tall buildings, where it would be a missed opportunity if we were constructing the top floor in the same way as we constructed the ground floor. Every tall building is a chance to test, hone, refine and learn new techniques.
