Subject: Rise Shafts – How to Avoid Unwanted Chimneys

Nick has a huge passion for safety and innovation. During his 30-year career in the construction industry he has been involved in many prestigious projects at many levels. In the past seven years his focus has been to make the construction industry safer through holistic thinking rather than silo mentality, which is restricting the wider good.

High-rise buildings are on the increase, but many people approach these developments as if they are thinking low-rise, with just a lot more levels. One of the most undervalued areas of design of any high-builds is the riser shafts (zones). These shafts connect every level of any high-rise building and in doing so, impact multiple trades and professions. However, in effect they are 'unfinished chimneys' during the construction phase - the perfect channels in the event of a fire. They also present a risk for falling from height.

We need to break free from the shackles of silo mentality, focusing on a collaborative approach that doesn't focus on unit cost in isolation, but cost over the entire construction process. In doing so, we will address one of the most complicated zones in every tall building.
